If You Spend It, They Will Come

On June 13, 2023, over 27,000 Oakland A’s fans packed into a deteriorating Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum to cheer on the worst team in baseball. Their cause? A “Reverse Boycott” that demonstrated that the team’s recently announced move to Vegas was not due to lack of fan enthusiasm but rather greed and manipulation by the team’s leadership, centrally billionaire owner John Fisher and team president Dave Kaval.

The team’s leadership justified the relocation from their home of 55 years by citing lack of support from City of Oakland and low attendance from fans in recent season. However, Fisher and Kaval have been laying the groundwork for their greed-motivated move for years, trading away star players and making increasingly unreasonable requests to the City to bolster their rationale for leaving, all the while leaving the Coliseum to rot without repair.

Yet, recent team history demonstrates that when team leadership invests into their team, the fans follow. Baseball belongs in Oakland and Oakland deserves better.
